Front suspension arm - removal
1. Loosen the wheel bolts, raise the vehicle and support it on stands. Remove the wheel.
2. On models with a front anti-roll bar, on the underside of the suspension arm, remove the two nuts (pic. M:14) and remove the stabilizer bar from the upper side of the arm.
3. Remove the clamping bolt and nut securing the ball joint pin to the steering knuckle and separate the suspension arm from the knuckle.
4. On vehicles with automatic transmission, it may be necessary to lift the power unit to gain access to the left suspension arm front pivot bolt, which is covered by the transmission housing. To do this, while supporting the power unit with a jack, disconnect the left transmission support, then unscrew the rear support nut and remove the torque rod in front of the power unit.
5. Remove the two bolts or nuts securing the arm rear pivot bracket and separate the bracket from the body (pic. M:14). On vehicles equipped with an anti-roll bar, the inner stabilizer bar is also held in place by one of these nuts.
6. Remove the pivot bolt of the front arm mounting and remove the suspension arm.
Installation
Installation of the suspension arm is carried out in the reverse order. Pay attention to the following:
- A) Check the condition of the front mounting pivot bolt, replace it if necessary. Remove oil and grease from bolt threads.
- b) Make sure that the threaded hole in the base of the body is free of anti-corrosion coating, and that the bolt can be easily screwed into it.
- V) Install the suspension arm to the vehicle and secure the rear pivot without fully tightening the mount.
- G) Install a new lock washer on the front mount pivot bolt and coat its threads with thread locking fluid (VW recommends D6 type fluid).
- d) Align the arm and install the front mount pivot bolt. Make sure the bolt is screwed in exactly on the thread.
- e) While holding the lever approximately in the normal position, tighten the front pivot bolt to 7.0 kNm, then the rear mounting bolts and nuts to 4.5 kNm. If the lever moves stiffly, adjust the position of the rear lever mounting bracket.
- and) Check and, if necessary, adjust the camber and toe of the front wheels.
Suspension arm bushings
Bushings of forward and back hinges of the lever replace in a following order:
Press the front bush out of the arm using a puller (pic. M:13). By inserting a bolt with a small recess in the head into the sleeve (the puller bolt must rest against the recess). Lubricate the new bushing with rubber grease and press it into the lever hole with a vise. Substitute a mandrel under the opposite edge of the lever hole, because. the bushing should protrude slightly from the hole.
The rear bushing is pressed onto the rear pivot pin of the lever. Press out or cut the bushing, clean the pivot pin and lubricate it with rubber grease, then press in a new bushing with a hammer.
