The electrical equipment of the engine consists of three main parts: battery charging system (charging circuit), engine start systems and ignition systems. The rest of the electrical equipment of the car is discussed in the chapter "electrical equipment".
Disturbances in the operation of the battery recharging system occur mainly due to improper operation of the vehicle (weakening or breakage of the alternator drive belt, oxidation of the battery terminals, unreliable connections in the charging circuit). Adjustment of the drive belt is described in chapter "Vehicle maintenance work", and methods for charging a discharged battery in the chapter "Basic rules for work".
The car is equipped with a starter with pre-engaged gears, which is activated by a solenoid relay (solenoid). Access to the starter is limited; for repair, the starter must be removed from the vehicle. The starter repair procedure is described in this chapter.
The car can be equipped with one of two types of generators - Motorola or Bosch. Their design is similar, repair of generators of both types is described in this chapter. If the inspection reveals a defect in the main parts of the generator, the most economical (compared to renovation) will purchase a new alternator from a VW dealer or an auto parts store.
Ignition distributors, both with contact interrupter and non-contact type, have a conventional design. Checking and adjusting contact breakers is described in chapter "Engine adjustment", removing and checking the distributor - in this chapter.
All Golf, Jetta and Scirocco models have an electrical system with negative (-) pole connected to "weight" (car body). When connecting and testing electrical devices, polarity must be strictly observed.
