Replacement
The camshaft seal can be replaced without removing the camshaft and cylinder head.
1. Remove the toothed belt as described earlier. Remove the sprocket mounting bolt and remove the sprocket from the camshaft.
2. Remove the oil seal from the socket in the cylinder head using a special VW puller (pic. AT 3) or two self-tapping screws and pliers (see chapter "Basic rules for work")
3. Make sure the oil seal seat in the cylinder head is clean and undamaged. Lubricate the seat and camshaft journal.
4. Install a new oil seal in the cylinder head. In order not to damage the edges of the oil seal on the sharp edges of the camshaft keyway, use a special protective sleeve (pic. AT 4) or wrap the camshaft shank with several layers of duct tape. Press the seal completely into the seat. Install the oil seal evenly, without distortion, using a special mandrel (pic. AT 5) or socket wrench (heads) suitable size. Insert washers between the head of the bolt and the mandrel.
5. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
