Oil seal replacement
The oil seal is installed in the auxiliary shaft cover and is easily replaced after removing the toothed belt.
1. Remove the cooling pump pulley. Remove the sprocket mounting bolt and remove the sprocket and slotted key from the auxiliary shaft.
2. Turn away two bolts and separate a cover of an auxiliary shaft from the block of cylinders.
3. Use a screwdriver to remove the old oil seal from the socket in the cover.
4. Clean the oil seal seat and lubricate it with a thin layer of engine oil.
5. Press a new oil seal into the socket until it stops. To press the oil seal there is a special tool VW 10-203 (pic. D.33), but in its absence, you can use a mandrel or a socket wrench of a suitable diameter. Make sure that the gland is installed evenly, without distortion.
6. Install the auxiliary shaft cover back on the cylinder block, using a new O-ring if necessary. Insert the key, install the sprocket and tighten the sprocket bolt to the correct torque. Install the pulley on the cooling pump. Install the toothed belt and all previously removed parts.
