Inspection
Inspect the camshaft and auxiliary shaft timing belt for wear or damage and replace if necessary.
1. To remove the timing belt, you must first remove the alternator belt, coolant pump pulley and cover cover) toothed belt.
2 Loosen the alternator mounting bolts and rotate the alternator up towards the cylinder block to loosen the belt. Remove the belt from the crankshaft pulleys, coolant pump and alternator.
3. Turn out bolts or turn away nuts of fastening of a cover of a gear belt and remove a cover. Turn away bolts and remove a pulley from a nave of the cooling pump.
4 On later models (since February 1979) The timing belt is completely covered by two covers, and in order to remove the bottom cover, the crankshaft pulley must be removed. In this case, after removing the bottom cover, temporarily install the crankshaft pulley in place.
5. Turn the crankshaft by the pulley mounting bolt using a socket or box wrench so that the alignment marks on the crankshaft pulley and the auxiliary shaft sprocket are aligned (pic. D:6), and the alignment mark on the camshaft sprocket was at the level of the upper surface of the cylinder head (pic. D:7).
6. Loosen the tensioner locknut and turn the tensioner counterclockwise to reduce belt tension.
7. Remove the toothed belt from the camshaft sprocket, then from the auxiliary and crankshaft sprockets.
ATTENTION: If the crankshaft is in the TDC position, when the timing belt is removed, the camshaft and crankshaft should not rotate, because. the valves and/or pistons may be damaged.
8. Install the new belt onto the sprockets and make sure that the alignment marks remain aligned.
9. Adjust the belt tension by turning the tensioner clockwise with a wrench by the flats on its trunnion (pic. D:8). The tension is correctly adjusted if the belt between the camshaft and auxiliary shaft sprockets can be manually twisted no more than 90° (pic. D:9). Secure the tensioner by tightening the locknut.
10. Check the belt tension again by turning the crankshaft two full turns in the direction of its normal rotation.
11. On engines of later releases, remove the crankshaft pulley, install the lower timing belt cover, then install the pulley back.
12. Install the top toothed belt cover and coolant pump pulley. Install the alternator belt and adjust its tension so that the deflection of the belt when strongly pressed with a finger in the middle between the crankshaft and alternator pulleys is approximately 12 mm. Tighten the mounting bolts and the alternator adjusting bar bolt.
