Most models have a conventional fuel system that includes a carburetor, fuel pump and fuel tank. The Gti and GLi models are equipped with the Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system.
Carburetor models are equipped with Solex, Zenith or Pierburg carburetors (depending on the working volume of the engine and its power); the type of carburetor is determined by the marking cast on the side of its body.
The fuel pump is a mechanical type, depending on the type of engine, it is mounted on the cylinder block or cylinder head. The fuel tank is located at the rear of the car under the rear seat, the filler cap is located in the right rear fender. The fuel tank is ventilated from the outside.
The system includes a fuel return line connected to a tee between the carburetor and the fuel pump, or directly to the carburetor float chamber. The fuel return flow is controlled by a restrictor installed in the fuel return line. An in-line fuel filter is integrated in the fuel supply line to the fuel pump, its replacement is described in chapter "Vehicle maintenance work". Sometimes an additional fuel filter is installed in the fuel line from the pump to the carburetor, which is designed to trap particles that entered the system during the assembly of the car. If the additional filter is clogged, it should be replaced with a piece of hose of the appropriate length.
On injection engines, instead of a carburetor, a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system is installed; in this case, the fuel pump is located at the rear of the car, next to the fuel tank. The pump is electrically driven Details of the fuel injection system are shown in rice. F:34 and rice. F:36 The carburetor / fuel injection system is the most complex unit on which the economy and efficiency of the engine depend. All parts of these systems are calibrated with high precision, in accordance with the requirements of a particular engine. The carburetor adjusting screws are covered with restrictive caps, plugs or paint to prevent unskilled intervention. The adjustments described in this chapter should be carried out only in extreme cases, leave any additional work to specialists.
For most carburetors, repair kits are available that contain all the necessary replacement parts. Remember that if the carburetor has been used for a long time, then as a rule, the most economical solution is to install a new unit.
Before starting any work on the fuel system, disconnect the wire "masses" from the battery. Safety precautions when working with the fuel system are described in chapter "Basic rules for work". The parts of the fuel system must be kept clean, thoroughly clean the surrounding area before disconnecting the fuel lines. If possible, always install new gaskets, o-rings, hoses, clamps, clamps, etc.
