During the tests, it turns out at what maximum speed the engine can rotate the torque converter if its turbine is held stationary. Make sure the engine is properly adjusted and warm up the engine and transmission to operating temperature (see chapter "Engine adjustment").
WARNING: No one should be in front of or behind the vehicle during this test.
1. Attach an accurate tachometer to the engine.
2. Install brake shoes under the front and rear wheels, tighten the hand brake and press the brake pedal.
3. Start the engine and set the selector lever to the position "D".
4. While firmly depressing the brake, fully depress the accelerator pedal and note the tachometer reading. Release the pedal.
ATTENTION. The duration of the check in the inhibited state should not exceed 10 seconds, because otherwise it will cause the oil to overheat.
5. The tachometer reading should be 2390-2640 rpm (for torque converter "TO" on models with 1.8 l engine) and 2340-2590 rpm (for torque converter "M" on models with a 1.5 or 1.6 liter engine). If the engine speed with the transmission braked does not fall within these limits, a defect in the torque converter, internal transmission parts, or insufficient engine power can be assumed.
NOTE: Identification mark (letter) torque converter is stamped on one of its mounting tabs (pic. K:7).
6. If the engine speed is less than the above, this indicates one of the following defects:
- A) If the engine speed is less than 200 rpm or less than required, then most likely this means insufficient engine power due to improper adjustment or other, more serious reasons.
- b) If the engine speed is lower than required by more than 200 rpm, then this means a malfunction of the torque converter - slipping of the stator freewheel.
7. If the engine speed is greater than indicated above, this indicates one of the following defects:
- A) The torque converter does not receive enough oil;
- b) The brake band slips in the transmission;
- V) Wrong type torque converter installed.
8. Remove the transmission and replace the torque converter if defective. If you suspect an internal transmission defect, consult a VW representative.
NOTE: When checking at a standstill, remember that the rated engine speed decreases by 125 rpm for every 1000 m above sea level.
