There are two basic models of manual transmission - four-speed gearbox 084 (used with 1.1/1.3 l engines) and four- or five-speed gearbox 020 (for engines 1.5/1 6 l). Gearbox modification 020 4+E is designed for 1.5/1.6 and 1.8 liter engines. On cars with a 1.8 liter engine with a fuel injection system, a five-speed gearbox is installed "sports" type. Gearboxes 084 and 020 have a different design, but both units are combined with the main gear into a single unit that has a common lubrication system

Depending on the type of gearbox installed, various parts associated with the gearbox are installed on the vehicle - the gear shift actuator, clutch, power unit support brackets, etc.

On vehicles with different types of engines, two completely different types of clutch are used (both types of clutch with mechanical cable drive).

Models with small engines (1.1/1.3 l) have a clutch of conventional design, mounted on the flywheel and controlled by a mechanism located in the clutch housing.

On models with larger displacement engines (1.5/1.6/1.8 l) The clutch drive plate and flywheel are reversed - the drive plate is bolted directly to the crankshaft flange and the flywheel is fixed to the clutch drive plate. The clutch disc is located between the flywheel and the drive disc.

The shaft with the clutch release lever and the release bearing are located at the end of the gearbox housing farthest from the engine and are connected to the clutch using a long pusher passing through the hollow input shaft of the gearbox. clutch mechanism.


Due to significant design differences, the repair procedure for different types of clutch is considered separately.

In the event of wear or breakage of transmission parts, it is most prudent to have the repair carried out by a VW representative or another person who has the necessary equipment.

In addition, it is possible to exchange a faulty transmission for a factory-rebuilt unit, where all parts have already been checked.
