Checking the protective cover of the steering mechanism

The movable connections between the steering mechanism and the tie rods are protected by a rubber boot. If the cover is damaged, then dirt and moisture enter the steering mechanism. Steering gear lube combines with dirt and moisture to form a sort of "grinding paste", which impairs the operation of the steering gear. Steering in a straight line becomes "viscous", additional adjustment no longer helps; jamming occurs when the wheels are turned, that is, after turning the steering wheel does not return to its original position.

It is best to exercise control when the front wheels are removed.

Turn the steering wheel left or right.

stretch case (corrugation) gradually, piece by piece, to reveal cracks in the corrugation.

Check whether the retaining ring is securely seated on the outside (see fig.).



Check for a secure fit on the inside.

If the cuff is defective, it should be replaced immediately (see section "Replacement of the transverse steering rod and cuff of the steering mechanism").
