Torn V-belt

If, while driving, the red battery indicator light suddenly flashes and you hear an extraneous sound in the engine compartment, this obviously indicates a broken V-belt. In this case, you need to stop the car and check. If the suspicion is confirmed, then in no case go further! Since the water pump is no longer running, the coolant circulation has been stopped. Therefore, you must immediately install a new V-belt or tow the car.

Emergency belt

A nylon stocking or pantyhose can help you out before towing the car, if the lady companion agrees to such a sacrifice.

With all your strength, stretch the stocking along the length, do not be afraid, it will not tear.

Then pull the stretched stocking as tightly as possible over three pulleys - the crankshaft, the water pump, the generator.

Pull tight again and carefully tie the ends in a knot.

Trim the protruding ends, but not very short, otherwise the knot will untie.

Start the engine and watch the water pump and generator spin flawlessly.

If necessary, try to tighten "hosiery" belt.

If this fails, lay the emergency belt only around the crankshaft pulleys and the water pump. You can drive to the nearest workshop without a running generator.

In this case, the stocking must be tied especially tight, since you do not have the opportunity to tighten it further.
