The exhaust system, which was used until July 1979, is rigidly connected to the exhaust pipe elbow and is connected to the gearbox using a bracket. Models built after August 1979 have a more flexible mount that includes spring-loaded clips at the exhaust elbow or turbocharger outlet; there is no bracket on the gearbox.
The exhaust system is attached to the bottom of the car on rubber holders.
Check the rubber holders for breaks, cracks or other defects. If necessary, replace with new ones.
When the engine is running, cover the exhaust pipe with a rag. The engine should stop after a short time.
If you hear hissing noises, and the engine continues to run without interference, then this means that the exhaust system is leaking.
More muffled than usual, the noise from the exhaust system indicates that the latter has rusted.
