Adjustment
1. If there is a very large amount of play in the steering gear, which is detected by knocking while driving, the gear must be adjusted as described below.
2. Using a jack, raise the front of the car and place it on stands.
3. With the front wheels in the straight ahead position, tighten the adjusting bolt by 20° (approximately) (photo 9.14).
4. Lower the vehicle and carry out a road test. If the steering wheel does not return to the center position after turning, it is necessary to unscrew the adjusting bolt by a small angle until the steering wheel returns to the center position on its own. The reason for the non-return of the steering wheel is a very large resistance in the transmission after the bolt is compressed.
5. If, nevertheless, during the ride it turns out that the steering gear has very large backlashes, it is necessary to gradually squeeze the adjusting bolt again in order to eliminate the backlash.
6. If the described method of adjustment is not sufficient, then the transmission is worn out and must be removed for inspection.
