Driving a car in winter

When driving in winter, remember the following:

• Winter weather has a particularly negative effect on batteries. Before the onset of cold weather, take the battery to a Volkswagen dealer.

If you do not need to operate the vehicle in low temperatures, be sure to remove the batteries.

• If the air temperature is below 0°C, on vehicles with diesel engines, use diesel fuel designed for use in winter.

• Before the onset of cold weather, check the concentration of antifreeze in the cooling system.
• An oil with a viscosity grade that matches the outside air temperature must be used.
• The best way to protect your car body is to wash and wax it frequently, especially in winter.
• It is mandatory to use a detergent with antifreeze in the windshield washer system in winter.
• Remove snow and ice from windows with a plastic scraper.

Using all-purpose tires or application tires in winter will improve your vehicle's driving stability.

• If you need to drive a car in winter in mountainous areas, it does not hurt to take a set of chains with you. On some mountain roads, they may be essential.
