Contact surfaces and gaskets
Wherever there is a gasket between two mating surfaces, it must be replaced with a new one during installation. Unless otherwise specified, it should be dry, not lubricated. It is necessary to check that the mating surfaces are clean and dry, that all remnants of the old gasket have been removed. To clean the mating surfaces, it is necessary to use a scraper that will not damage the surface. Burrs and scratches should be removed with a bar or fine file. Threaded holes should be cleaned with a tap. Unless otherwise indicated. sealing substances should be used in them. All openings, channels and tubes must be purged (best with compressed air).
Seals
Seal, removable separately or as part of a kit. must be replaced with a new one each time. It is very easy to damage the thin sponge of the seal if the surface it comes into contact with is not perfectly clean and free of scratches. It is necessary to protect the seal from damage, for example, the sharp edge of the surface can damage it during laying. Where possible, tape or a plastic sleeve should be used. Before laying the seal, it is necessary to cover its lips with oil, and if the seal has two lips, fill the space between them with grease. Unless otherwise specified, seals must be installed with sealing lips in the direction of the element to be sealed. To lay the seal, it is necessary to use a tube of the appropriate diameter or a wooden block of the appropriate size, and if the seal seat is turned, press the seal to the stop.
If the seal seat is not turned, the seal is inserted so that its surface is flush with the surface of the housing into which it is pressed.
Thread and connections
Before tightening the bolts, make sure that no oil or other liquid remains in the non-through threaded holes. Failure to do so may cause a crack in the housing due to the pressure generated by the tightening of the bolt or threaded gear.
When checking and tightening a nut or bolt with a certain moment. loosen the nut or bolt a quarter of a turn. and then wait for a certain moment.
Under locknuts, safety plates and gaskets between each connecting element (bolt, and the surface to which they are screwed, a gasket must be laid. It is always necessary to replace spring gaskets with new ones. Guard plates that are bent to hold a nut or bolt also need to be replaced. VW recommends replacing self-locking nuts every time.
Cotter pins must always be replaced with new ones, and their size must correspond to the size of the given hole.
Tool and organization to make work easier
A good tool is the basis for the quality performance of safety and repair work.
For the car owner who does not have any tools. buying it would be a significant expense. However, if the tool is of high quality, it will serve for many years.
A novice mechanic should have a set of tools for minor safety repairs and do simple work on the car. As he gains experience, he can take on more complex operations by purchasing additional tools. Thus, a set of tools for minor repair and safety work can be increased to a set that allows repair and repair without a one-time large financial outlay. The experienced hobbyist will have a good enough set of tools to perform most repairs, while at the same time complementing the tool from the category of special, when it is convinced that the expense is justified by the use of this tool.
