Before disassembling and adjusting the cylinder head and timing mechanism, follow the instructions below:
The camshaft is mounted in the block head in five bearings. The rear bearing is used to adjust the axial play of the shaft. Given the protrusion of hydraulic tappets, before starting the processing of valve seats, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the contents of the section.
On the engines of the described models of VW Golf cars, camshafts that differ in valve timing can be installed.
When removing the camshaft (e.g. to gain access to valve springs and tappets), care must be taken that when using pullers, the force of their springs does not bend the shaft. Since camshafts can differ from each other, when ordering them, it is imperative to indicate the type and identification code of the engine.
Thanks to automatic clearance compensation by hydraulic tappets, there is no need for periodic adjustment of valve clearances.
Valve seats, springs, and valve stem gaskets are difficult to access, as they are located in the recesses of the block head. In the further description of the order of operation, it is assumed that the user will follow all the recommendations and will use the recommended tools and fixtures. During disassembly, attention must be paid to remember how the parts to be removed were installed (tappets, crackers, plates, external and internal valve springs, oil seals, bottom plates).
