To gain access to the parts of the pump, it is necessary to remove its cover with a suction pipe. Assess the condition of the gears based on the checks below. If excessive wear is found on the parts, replace the pump assembly. The suction pipe can be washed in gasoline.
The gears are checked as follows:
- Clean the pump well and insert a feeler gauge between the gear teeth as shown in fig. 97. If it is possible to insert a stylus with a thickness of 0.2 mm, then the wear limit has been reached. In the new pump, the gap is 0.05 mm; the size of the gap characterizes the degree of wear of the engagement.
- Attach a metal ruler to the mating plane of the pump cover and measure the gaps between the plane and the gears, as shown in fig. 98. A gap greater than 0.15 mm indicates wear on the pump housing and must be replaced.
Remove the pressure reducing valve assembly from the pump cover. Parts wear means that the valve or pump assembly must be replaced.
