Before starting work on servicing electronic ignition systems, you should familiarize yourself with the requirements, the obligatory fulfillment of which is related to the safety of work and the risk of damage to systems (see similar chapter for 1.3l engines).
On engines with a displacement of 1.6 liters, until December 1984, a contact ignition system was installed. Since January 1985 on engines. with a working volume of 1.6 l, as well as on engines with a working volume of 1.8 l with indices GU, EV, GX, KR and RH, a transistorized ignition system is installed as standard (TSZ-H).
Engines with indices RD, RG, PL and HT are equipped with a transistorized ignition system with an additional control unit. This ignition system is called fully electronic ignition system (VEZ).
On engines equipped with the Digifant integrated fuel injection system developed by VW, the VEZ system is integrated into the fuel injection control unit. Engines with the Digifani system have the indices PF, PB, 1P, 1H and PG.
