In this position, block the bolt against the bracket 30-21 and check again if the clearance has changed.
Lay the measuring sleeve VW 549 on the toe of the input shaft (pic. 352) and between the bearing cover and the gearbox housing, insert a new gasket. Since the spring washer for the gear was eliminated during the manufacture of the gearbox, its thickness must be taken into account during adjustment.
To do this, use a washer with catalog number 020311151 and, slightly increasing its inner diameter, put it on the shaft. Place this washer under the measuring sleeve.
Insert the shaft into the gearbox housing without the ball bearing. Tighten the five bolts to a torque of 25 Nm.
Mount the VW 382/7 indicator stand and the VW 383/9 indicator as shown in fig. 353, reset the indicator to zero and set the initial value to 3 mm.
Move the measuring sleeve from top to bottom and measure the gap «X» between the bearing race and the box housing. Based on the measurement result, select the thickness of the shim according to the table. 20.

The washers are 0.30 mm and 0.60 mm thick and can be used in pairs if necessary.
Matched washer 1 (see fig. 343) should be placed between the input shaft bearing and the gearbox housing during assembly.
