The adjustment of the power steering mechanism in both considered steering designs is carried out differently and is therefore described separately.
TWR Type Power Steering Mechanism
If a special key from the company is available for adjusting the power steering mechanism «Volkswagen», then subsequent work can be carried out with the mechanism removed. If the steering mechanism is being adjusted, the engine will not run.
The car is installed in front on a lifting platform.
The steering mechanism is set to move in a straight line and from this position is turned by an assistant in both directions by 30°. A knocking sound is heard if the power steering mechanism requires further adjustment.
The adjusting bolt is slowly screwed into the cover using a special tool until it can no longer be heard inside the car
A test run is made, if the steering does not return by itself to the position of driving in a straight line, then the adjusting bolts are slightly loosened. If play is still felt in the steering wheel, then this bolt is tightened a little more.
Power Steering Mechanism Type ZF
This power steering mechanism is adjustable in the same position.
The car is mounted in front on reliable goats so that you can work from below.
The wheels are set to the straight ahead position.
Turn the steering wheel about 30°from the middle position and check for rattling noises. If audible, then screw the adjusting bolt until they become audible. During this adjustment, the assistant must turn the steering wheel further in both directions.
After this adjustment, a test run is made on the vehicle to check whether the steering returns by itself back to the straight-ahead position. A trial run is made while observing the operation of the system and, if possible, on a track with little traffic. The power steering mechanism must always be handled with great care.
