Power steering uses a piston that functions in a cylinder and is mounted at the end of the steering gear. In accordance with the rotation of the steering wheel, this piston is set to one side or the other under the influence of a liquid under pressure, thereby reducing the force required to control the steering mechanism. The fluid used in the control system is the same as the fluid used in automatic transmissions.
This liquid is sucked from the tank by means of a vane pump and injected into the spool valve.
In manufactured car models «Golf» two different steering mechanisms are installed (TRW or ZF), parts of which are not interchangeable, which also applies to tie rods, cuffs, rubber bearings and other parts. The following text applies in general to the TRW control mechanism. Differences in the ZF mechanism will be noted when they occur.
