Before carrying out this work, it is necessary to read the instructions given above, which refer in particular to the differences between the applied power steering mechanisms.
Release the fastening clips of the power steering gaiters on the respective sides, and pull out the rubber gaiters on the tie rods. Remove all visible grease.
Clamp the steering mechanism together with the gear rack in a vise. In order not to damage the toothed rack, use aluminum «cheeks».
Install a large wrench on the surfaces of the steering knuckle housing (key width 32 mm) and unscrew the tie rod.
Screw a new tie rod into the gear rack.
Clamp the rack again in a vise and screw in the tie rod. The tie rod must be tightened with a tightening torque of 70 Nm. Lubricate the gear rack well. firm "Volkswagen" a special grease AOF 063 000 04 is used for this purpose.
Reinstall the steering gear boot and secure it with the retaining clip, workshops use special pliers for this. If such tongs are not at your disposal, then you need to pay attention to that. so that the clamp is well seated and cannot loosen.
If the left tie rod is replaced, the size (A) must be installed at a length of 223±1 mm.
Right tie rod (on which the wheel alignment is installed) can be adjusted to this length approximately without tightening the lock nut.
After installing the power steering mechanism, the toe-in is adjusted and both locknuts are tightened with a tightening torque of 50 Nm.
