Draining and filling the cooling system
Switch the heating system control lever located on the dashboard to the position «Heiss» («Hot»).
Unscrew the expansion tank cap. If the motor is hot, wait a while before unscrewing the screw cap.
Let the fluid drain by disconnecting the bottom water hose or unscrewing the fitting. If the condition of the antifreeze is good, i.e. it was in operation for a relatively short time, it can be assembled.
To ensure that the cooling system is filled without any air gap, proceed as follows.
Switch the heating lever to the position «Heiss» («Hot»).
Attach the bottom hose to the radiator or screw in the water fitting with a new seal.
Fill the expansion tank to the top and screw the screw cap back on.
Start the engine and let it run until the fan turns on.
Check the condition of the fluid. If its level does not reach the mark on the expansion tank, an additional amount of antifreeze mixture must be poured into the system. If the engine is hot. coolant level may slightly exceed the Max mark. However, once the engine has cooled down, the level should be between the Min and Max marks.
The cooling system is filled with antifreeze at the factory; for a whole year it must remain in the system. We recommend using G 11 antifreeze supplied by the company «Volkswagen», since its chemical composition is specifically designed for this engine. It is necessary to fill the cooling system with G 11 antifreeze even in the presence of two, less expensive antifreezes, in the following respect:
- freezing point down to -25°C: 2.6 liters of antifreeze; 3.9 water;
- freezing point down to -35°C: 3.25 liters of antifreeze; 3.25 liters of water.
The mixture should be mixed in some kind of container and poured into the cooling system already mixed. The commonly used method is that the anti-freeze agent is loaded first and then the water is poured does not provide an instantaneous production of an anti-freeze agent, since it must first be introduced into the circulation by means of a coolant pump.
