Order of execution
1. Unscrew the spark plug and secure it to the engine block.
2. Connect the high voltage wire to the spark plug. Hold the spark plug with special pliers with insulated handles.
3. Cranking the engine over with the starter, check for spark between the spark plug electrodes.
Warning: When checking for a spark between the electrodes of the spark plug, gasoline must not enter the engine, as this will damage the catalyst. To do this, disconnect the electrical connectors from the fuel injectors. If a spark jumps between the electrodes of the spark plug, then the ignition system is in order.
CAUSE | ELIMINATION METHOD |
Difficulty starting the engine or the engine does not start | |
Incorrect actions when starting a gasoline engine | Apply the handbrake and press the clutch. On models with automatic transmission, set the selector lever to the position "R" or "N". Turn the ignition key to start the engine and after the engine starts, release the ignition key. Do not press the accelerator pedal. The movement can be started immediately after starting the engine, even in winter. If after cranking the engine with the starter for 10 seconds the engine does not start, interrupt the process of starting the engine and repeat it after at least 30 seconds. With several successive attempts to start the engine, the catalyst can be damaged, as unburned fuel enters the exhaust system and is deposited on the catalyst cells. When starting a hot engine, after the engine starts running, depress the accelerator pedal lightly |
Low compression in the engine cylinders | Replace cylinder head gasket or overhaul engine |
Defective fuse for:
– electric fuel pump, – electronic injection system | Check fuses |
Fuel system malfunction | System contamination, pipeline bent or deformed. Check the amount of fuel supplied. |
Starter cranks engine very slowly | Charge the battery. Check starter circuit |
Incorrect valve timing | Check valve timing. Check toothed belt tension |
