Gearbox, final drive. Check the condition and make sure there are no leaks or damage.
Vehicles with automatic transmission. Check the oil level in the box and add oil if necessary.
Direct Shift Automatic Transmission (DSG). Change oil and oil filter.
4x4 vehicles (4Motion). Change the oil in the Haldex differential.
Visual leak test
Special tools are not required.
Leaks are possible in the following places:
- at the junction between the cylinder block and the gearbox (flywheel seal/gearbox shaft seal);
- at the junction of the gearbox and the axle shafts of the front wheel drive;
- on the oil filler plug;
- on the drain plug.
To locate leaks, do the following:
1. Clean the gearbox housing with a cold cleaner.
2. Sprinkle lime or talc on suspected oil leaks.
3. Carry out a test drive. Since when the engine is heated, the fluidity of the oil increases and it seeps faster in places where the tightness is broken.
The length of the test drive should be about 30 km.
Attention! Jacking up a vehicle or placing it on jack stands is dangerous. Therefore, it is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the safety precautions outlined in chapter «car jacking».
4. Place the vehicle on stands.
5. Inspect the gearbox by lighting it with a flashlight and locate leaks.
6. Eliminate leaks and add oil to the gearbox.
Attention! If necessary, oil can be poured into the gearbox to check the oil level in the gearbox. To do this, unscrew the plug from the control hole on the side of the gearbox near the drive shaft. The oil level in the gearbox should be level with the lower edge of the inspection hole. The tightening of the test hole plug is 30 Nm if it is a socket head socket head bolt or 45 Nm if it is a socket head head bolt.
