- candle key, for example, HAZET 4766-1;
- appropriate pullers, depending on the type of engine;
- vehicles with a 1.4-/1.6 liter BCA/BKG/BLN/BAG/BLF/BLP engine - VW-T10094 or HAZET 1849-7 puller;
- vehicles with 1.6 liter BGU/BSE/BSF engine - VW-ST10112 or HAZET 1849-9 puller;
- vehicles with 2.0 liter TFS1 engine AXW/BLRJBLX/BL Y/AXX- puller VW-T40039.
Attention! In the absence of these tools, it will be necessary to dismantle parts that make it difficult to access plugs or ignition coils. It should be remembered that when using another tool to remove the coils, there is a danger, especially for a 2.0 liter engine, damage to the ignition coil.
Materials needed: 4 spark plugs of the appropriate specification.
Attention! I Spark plugs should only be removed when the engine is cold, or the temperature must be such that one can hold one's hand on it. When removing spark plugs from a hot engine, the threads in the spark plug sockets that are mounted on the cylinder head made of light metal can be damaged.
Vehicles with a 1.4 liter BCA petrol engine with a power output of 55 kW (75 hp.)
Removing
1. Unscrew the mounting bolts, remove the protective cover over the motor and place it upside down on a soft pad to avoid scratches, see the relevant chapter.
2. Feed the ignition coils with the VW-T10094 or HAZET 1849-7 puller slightly up (see illustration).
3. Press the plug to the ignition coil, squeeze the plug clamps with your hand and disconnect the plug from the coil.
4. Remove ignition coils.
5. Unscrew the spark plugs using a spark plug wrench, for example, V W-3122B or HAZET 4766-1 (see illustration).
Installation
6. Screw in the new spark plugs by hand until they touch the cylinder head and tighten them with a force of 30 Nm.
7. Connect the power plugs to the coils and secure them.
8. Install the ignition coils on the spark plugs and straighten them in accordance with the openings on the cylinder head cover.
Attention! The coils should lock into place, accompanied by a distinct click.
9. Replace the protective cover over the motor, see the appropriate chapter.
Vehicles with 1.4-/1.6-litre FSI engine BKG/BLN/BAG/BLF/BLP 66/85 kW (90/115 hp.)
Removing
10. Unscrew the fastening bolts, remove the protective cover over the engine and place it upside down on a soft pad to avoid scratches, see the relevant chapter.
11. Feed the ignition coils with puller A, for example, V W-T10094 or HAZET 1849-7 slightly up (see illustration).
12. Press the lock of the ignition coil plug using hook B, for example, VW-T10118 and disconnect the plug from the coil (see illustration 15.11).
13. Remove ignition coils.
14. Unscrew the spark plugs using a spark plug wrench, such as VW-3122B or HAZET 4766-1.
Installation
15. Screw in the new spark plugs by hand until they touch the cylinder head and tighten them with a force of 30 Nm.
16. Put on the ignition coil puller VW-T10094 or HAZET 1849-7.
17. Connect the power plugs to the coils and fix them.
18. Install the ignition coils on the spark plugs, straighten them in accordance with the openings on the cylinder head cover and secure by pressing the puller down.
19. Replace the protective cover over the motor, see the appropriate chapter.
Vehicles with 1.6 liter BGU/BSE/BSF petrol engine, 75 kW (102 hp.)
20. Unscrew the mounting bolts, remove the protective cover over the engine and place it upside down on a soft pad to avoid scratches, see the relevant chapter.
21. Disconnect plugs of nozzles of 1st and 4th cylinders. Cylinder #1 is located in the engine's ribbed belt.
22. Remove the ignition coils using a puller A, for example, VW-T10112 or HAZET 1849-9 (see illustration).
Attention! In the absence of these tools, it will be necessary to dismantle parts that make it difficult to access the plugs of the ignition coils. In this case, it is recommended to have the replacement of the spark plugs carried out by a workshop.
23. Unscrew the spark plugs using a spark plug wrench, such as VW-3122B or HAZET 4766-1.
Installation
24. Screw in new spark plugs by hand until they touch the cylinder head and tighten them with a force of 2 5 Nm
25. Connect the power plugs to the coils and make sure they are firmly seated.
26. Replace the protective cover over the motor, see the appropriate chapter.
Vehicles with engine (T) FSI 2.0 liter AXW/BLR/BLX/BL Y/AXX 110/147kW (150/200 hp.)
Removing
27. Unscrew the mounting bolts, remove the protective cover over the engine and place it upside down on a soft pad to avoid scratches, see the relevant chapter.
28. Unscrew two bolts 1 and remove the guide (see illustration).
29.Install the puller VW-T40039 (see A in illustration) on the ignition coil so that the puller is fixed only on the upper, thick ledge 1 of the coil. If the puller is fixed on the lower tabs, they will break.
30. Pull the puller and lift the ignition coils about three centimeters (see arrow in illustration 15.29).
31. Press the plugs 2 to the ignition coils, squeeze the leashes of the plug clamps with your hand and disconnect the plugs from the coils (see illustration 15.28).
32. Remove the ignition coils from the cylinder head.
33. Unscrew the spark plugs using a spark plug wrench, such as VW-3122B or HAZET 4766-1.
Installation
34. Screw in the new spark plugs by hand until they touch the cylinder head and tighten them with a force of 25 Nm.
35. Install the ignition coils in their mounting holes so that the coil plugs can be connected.
36. Connect plugs of ignition coils and be convinced that they were fixed.
37. Put the tips on the spark plugs and turn them by hand so that they are fixed.
38. Bolt the wire guide.
39. Reinstall the top protective cover of the engine, see the appropriate chapter.
Upgrading the Thread of the Spark Plug Socket
Attention! If it turns out that the thread of the socket on the cylinder head where the spark plug is screwed in is damaged, then this thread must be renewed. For cutting new threads, BERU offers a suitable repair kit. Using a special drill, turn off the damaged thread. The cylinder head does not need to be dismantled for this. Then cut a new thread in the socket and screw in the spark plug with a special sealing insert. Inserts provide firmness of landing of candles and the required level of compression.
Spark Plugs for Golf/Touran Cars
Attention! Due to constant technical changes, it may be that certain types of engines require spark plugs with different parameters. Therefore, when purchasing spark plugs, it is recommended to have a registration certificate with a vehicle identification number with you. The data sheet also contains a three-digit engine code.
