The coolant is not replaced as part of maintenance. If during the repair the cylinder head, cylinder head gasket, radiator, heater or engine were replaced, it is recommended to replace the coolant. This is necessary so that the particles of anti-corrosion protection during the running-in period settle on new parts made of light metals and thus form a strong anti-corrosion film. The content of the anti-corrosion agent in the old coolant is no longer sufficient to form a protective layer on new parts.
Attention! The coolant is poisonous. It cannot be poured in random places. To do this, you need to find out where the nearest collection point for special funds is located or to hand over the coolant at a disposal point.
Coolant drain
1. Remove the mudguard (protection) engine, see relevant chapter.
Attention! When the engine is hot, place a thick cloth over the filler cap before removing the expansion tank cap to prevent burns from hot coolant or steam. Remove the cover only when the coolant temperature is below +90°C.
2. Remove the cap from the expansion tank.
3. Place a clean container under the engine to collect the coolant.
4. Unscrew plug 2 from the drain hole and drain the coolant (see illustration).
Attention! In order to avoid splashing of the coolant when draining, it is recommended to put a hose on fitting 1, through which the liquid will flow in a direction into the container (see illustration 2.4).
Attention! For vehicles without a drain plug, remove clip 3 and disconnect the hose from the radiator to drain the fluid. After draining, put on the hose and secure it with a clamp (see illustration 2.4).
5. Cars with 1.6 liter BGU/BSE/BSF petrol engines and diesel engines. Drain the coolant from the cylinder block cooling jacket. To do this, loosen the hose clamp on the oil cooler (see arrow in illustration), disconnect the hose and drain the fluid. After draining, put on the hose and secure it with a clamp.
6. Vehicles with a 2.0 liter petrol engine. Drain the coolant from the cylinder block cooling jacket. To do this, release the hose clamp 1 pipeline (see illustration), slide it onto the hose, disconnect the hose and drain the fluid. After draining, put on the hose and secure it with a clamp.
Coolant filling
7. Prepare a new coolant containing 50% water and 50% antifreeze.
8. Remove the engine mudguard, see the appropriate chapter, and lower the car onto the wheels.
9. Pour the prepared liquid through the neck of the tank to the top line on the highlighted field on the wall of the tank (label MAX) (see illustration).
Removal of air from the cooling system
10. Close the coolant expansion tank.
11. Set the passenger compartment heater switch to position «kalt» (cold or off).
12. Start the engine and keep it at 2000 rpm for about three minutes. After that, leave the engine to idle until the radiator fan turns on.
Attention! When the engine is hot, place a thick cloth over the filler cap before removing the expansion tank cap to prevent burns from hot coolant or steam. Remove the cover only when the coolant temperature is below +90°C.
13. Check the coolant level and, if necessary, top up to the MAX mark on the expansion tank.
The coolant level in the tank with the engine warmed up to operating temperature should be at the top mark (MAX), and when cold - in the center of the selected field on the tank wall, i.e. between the MAX and M1N·marks.
14. Stop the engine.
