Raise the vehicle from the rear, see section «Vehicle lifting».
Remove rear wheel.
Pull off the protective cap. Various tools can be used to squeeze the cap, but care must be taken to ensure that the cap is not damaged. Water can enter the bearing through a damaged protective cap, causing the bearing to quickly collapse. Therefore, dented and deformed caps must always be replaced.
The protective cap can be pulled out with suitable pliers or pressed out with a screwdriver.
Pull out the cotter pin and remove the lock washer.
Loosen hex nut slightly and tighten again. The bearing clearance is set correctly if the pressure washer can still be moved with a screwdriver under finger pressure (arrow). Never lean on the washer with a screwdriver by turning it or using it as a lever.
Attention: When tightening the nut, turn the wheel by hand to make sure that the bearing does not jam.
Install the lock washer so that the cotter pin can be inserted.
Insert a new cotter pin and bend its ends.
Carefully drive in the protective cap using tool VW-40-21.
If a tool is not available, this can be done with a suitable pipe, the inner diameter of which is adjacent to the cap shoulder.
Attention: A dented or deformed cap must be replaced, because due to leaks, moisture penetrates into the bearing and it quickly collapses.
Install the rear wheel, lower the vehicle, tighten the wheel bolts crosswise to 110 Nm.
