Removing
Loosen the rear wheel bolts.
Raise the car from behind.
Remove brake drum or brake disc, see chapter «Brake system».
Remove wheel bearings.
Attention: Bearings to be installed again must be carefully protected from dirt. Tapered roller bearings must not be washed. Penetrated foreign bodies are not removed by washing the bearing.
Knock out the bearing races with a copper rod. At the same time, attach the rod along the circumference to different sides of the cage in order to prevent misalignment of the bearing.
Attention: use only a flawless rod so that no burrs form on the clip.
Wipe the axle pin and brake drum, as well as the wheel hub with a clean cloth and alcohol.
Installation
Vehicles with disc brakes: Fit the protective ring with the special tool VW-519 or with a suitable tube! Installation position: dimension a = 9.5 mm.
Drive the bearing races -C- up to the stop. The workshop uses the VW-432 tool for this. If the device is missing, then the clips are carefully driven by a suitable pipe.
Tapered roller bearing filled with bearing grease (lithium grease).
Lubricate and insert the inner bearing.
Lubricate the sealing ring between the sealing lips with bearing grease.
Caution: The sealing ring must be replaced. If the O-ring is damaged or not carefully installed, moisture can enter the bearing. This leads to a rapid failure of the bearing.
Shoe brake car:
Drive the sealing ring up to the stop using a suitable pipe.
Install the brake drum while also inserting the outer tapered bearing, see above.
Vehicle with disc brake:
Drive the sealing ring up to the stop with a plastic hammer.
Fill hub with bearing grease and insert with outer tapered bearing, see below.
Adjust wheel bearing clearance.
Install the rear wheel and tighten the wheel bolts crosswise to 110 Nm.
