Attention: For vehicles with all-wheel drive, some parts of the strut support have been changed. Vehicles with adjustable ride height are not considered (optional equipment), in this case, you should contact the VAG workshop
Removing
The car must be on wheels.
Loosen the fastening of the lining of the luggage compartment.
Limousine: Unscrew the automatic seat belt retractor in the luggage compartment.
Remove 2 mounting bolts on interior side. The picture shows a video of the rear left window side.
Loosen the lower mounting bolts.
Raise the vehicle slowly, see section «Vehicle lifting».
Caution: In a vehicle with all-wheel drive, make sure that the universal joints do not lean too far downwards, as this could damage the constant velocity universal joint. Therefore, with the vehicle fully raised and the shock absorber strut removed, support the diagonal arm with a garage jack or jack stands.
Turn the shock absorber strut until the 4 retaining tabs of the upper strut mount are opposite the recesses, then pull the strut out.
Disassembly
Attention: On vehicles with all-wheel drive, disassembly must be carried out in a VAG workshop, so this work is not described here.
Remove the cap with a screwdriver.
Remove sealing ring.
In order to remove the shock absorber, it is necessary to compress the coil spring. The VAG workshop uses a special tool for this.
Attention: Never let go of the shock absorber when the spring is not compressed.
Compress the coiled spring with a suitable tool.
Caution: If the grips of the spring compressor are inserted between the coils of the spring, make sure that the coils of the spring are securely gripped and the grips cannot slip. The spring must be compressed from both sides. The coiled spring is compressed with great force, so use only a serviceable tool. Never tie up the spring with wire. Danger of accident!
Loosen the fastening nut. In this case, hold the piston rod with a wrench.
Remove individual parts. Release the spring carefully.
shock absorber check see below.
Assembly
The shock absorber can be replaced separately. shock absorber check see below.
Note: Springs are available with different manufacturing tolerances. Use springs with the same manufacturing tolerance on one bridge (identified by color).
The new spring is covered with a protective varnish against corrosion. Before installing the spring, inspect it for damage to the lacquer layer, if necessary, restore the lacquer coating.
Assemble shock absorber strut according to drawing 42-622.
Compress the spring with a suitable tool and place it on the shock absorber strut. Make sure that the end of the spring rests on the guide plate.
Set the spring seat to the correct position.
Align the shock absorber mount with respect to the lower shock absorber lug.
A - shock absorber lug axle,
B - shock absorber support axis, angle a = 50°.
Tighten new mounting bolts to 25 Nm.
Insert sealing ring.
Press the protective cap into the shock absorber mount.
Slowly release the spring.
Installation
Insert the shock absorber strut into the recesses in the body and fix it by turning the strut.
Screw the bottom of the shock absorber strut to the lever, do not tighten the nut.
Tighten top of shock absorber strut to 25 Nm.
Lower the car slowly.
Tighten the lower shock absorber nut to 70 Nm (for a car with all-wheel drive - a torque of 65 Nm). The bridge beam and lever must be in a horizontal position when tightening the nut (unloaded car).
If removed, tighten the automatic seat belt retractor in the luggage compartment to 40 Nm.
Install luggage compartment trim.
Shock absorber check
The shock absorber can be checked by hand.
Remove shock absorber.
Keep the shock absorber in the same position as during installation, then stretch and compress it.
Throughout the entire stroke, the shock absorber piston rod should move equally heavily and without jerks.
A shock absorber defect is also determined during a trip through cod and roar.
With perfect operation, slight traces of oil on the shock absorber: on its surface are not grounds for replacement.
If there is a large loss of oil, replace the shock absorber.
