Removing
Remove wheel cover.
Unscrew the nut securing the wheel hub to the propeller shaft and remove it together with the washer.
Caution: Loosening and tightening the nut must only be carried out with the vehicle standing on its wheels. Danger of accident!
Loosen the wheel bolts, raise the vehicle and remove the wheel, see section «Vehicle lifting».
Support the cardan shaft so that it does not sag down after the shock absorber strut has been removed. To do this, under the cardan shaft next to the rubber corrugated cover of the outer cardan joint of equal angular velocities, substitute the supporting goats.
From the engine compartment, remove the shock absorber strut cover.
Unscrew the nut from the piston rod with a strongly bent ring wrench. Hold the piston rod with an Allen key SW7. The workshop uses VW-3078 tool for this (for 6-cylinder engines - VW-3186) or HAZET 2593-22 with HAZET 2110-7 external hexagon wrench. If a special tool is not available, a standard torque wrench can be used.
Attention: Before removing, mark the installation position of the lower shock absorber strut mounting nut. To do this, circle the head of the bolt or nut with a scriber.
Loosen nuts and remove bolts.
Remove shock absorber.
Installation
Install the shock absorber strut, install the bolts and tighten the nuts by hand.
Tighten the new shock absorber strut upper nut to 60 Nm while holding the piston rod with an Allen key SW7.
Attention: in order to be able to use a torque wrench, tool VW-3078 or HAZET 2593-22 is required with a HAZET 21 10-7 hexagon socket wrench as holding device.
Move the shock absorber strut at the bottom so that the bolts are in the previously marked position, then tighten the nuts to 95 Nm.
Screw on the wheel.
Lower the car.
Tighten wheel bolts to 110 Nm.
Slide the cover onto the top of the shock absorber strut.
Install wheel cover.
