Maintenance
Maintenance of gasoline engines must be carried out every 15,000 km or at least once a year. For diesel engines - every 7500 km. Under severe operating conditions such as city and short distance driving, frequent mountain driving, trailer towing and dusty road conditions, maintenance should be performed every 5000 km.
- Engine: change oil and filter.
- Fuel filter: remove water (diesel engine only).
- Disc brake pads: check thickness.
Service
Maintenance must be carried out at the following intervals: every 12 months - for items marked with the sign «•», and every 30,000 km - for all service positions indicated by signs «•» and «■».
Attention: In the VW PASSAT workshop, during checks, the memory of fault codes in the electronic systems of the engine, gearbox and air conditioning system is additionally interrogated. Therefore, it makes sense to visit a specialist workshop regularly, even when maintenance is carried out by yourself.
Engine
«•» Engine: change oil, change oil filter.
«•» Cooling and heating systems: check fluid level, check antifreeze concentration. Visual check of tightness and external contamination of the radiator.
«•» Exhaust system: Check for damage.
«•» Engine: visual inspection of the lubrication system for leaks.
«•» The speed of the crankshaft when the engine is idling: check, adjust if necessary.
«•» Petrol engine: Check CO content, adjust if necessary.
«•» Diesel engine: remove water from the fuel filter.
■ Toothed, V-belts and V-ribbed belts: check the condition and tension of all belts. Tighten belts if necessary (if there is no automatic tensioner).
■ Fuel filter: replace (diesel and carburetor engines).
■ Dry air filter: Clean the filter housing. Replace filter element (every 30,000 km or every 2 years).
■ Spark plugs: replace. Only vehicles up to 8/95 (except for those equipped with a 160 hp engine.). For exact change intervals, see chapter «Spark plug».
■ Compressor: check.
Gearbox, final drive
«•» Hinge covers: Check for tightness and damage.
«•» Manual and automatic transmissions: visual check for leaks.
«•» Automatic transmission up to approx. 12/94: Check ATF level, top up if necessary.
■ Manual gearbox: check the oil level in the gearbox and final drive.
Front axle and steering
«•» Tie rod ends: check clearance and fastening, check dust caps.
«•» Hinges: Check clearance and dust caps.
«•» Steering: check clearance, check bellows for tightness and damage.
■ Power steering: check fluid level, top up hydraulic fluid level if necessary (for vehicles from 9/91 only every 60,000 km).
■ Vehicles with airbag from 9/92: visual check for external damage to the gasket and airbag module at the instrument panel on the right.
Body
«•» Door hinges: grease.
«•» Heating system: replace the dust and pollen filter.
■ Anti-corrosion protection of the underbody and protection of hidden cavities with anti-corrosion agents: check.
■ Seat belts: Check for damage.
■ Sliding roof panel: clean the water drainage holes.
Brakes, tires, wheels
«•» Brake system: Check lines, hoses, brake cylinders and connections for leaks and damage.
«•» Brake fluid level: Check, top up if necessary.
«•» Brake system: Check the thickness of the front and rear brake pads.
«•» Tire set: check tread height and tire pressure: check tires for wear and damage (including spare wheel).
Electrical system
«•» Lighting system: check, if necessary, adjust the main headlights.
«•» Beep: check.
«•» Windshield wipers: check the rubber bands of the wiper blades for wear, check the angle of the wiper blades.

«•» Battery: check voltage, electrolyte level and fastening.
Every 2 years
Brake fluid: replace.
Every 60,000 km
Automatic transmission: change ATF oil and mesh, check oil level in final drive.
Replace spark plugs. Applies mainly to vehicles manufactured from 9/95 and equipped with a 160 hp engine.
Every 90,000 km
90/110 hp turbocharged diesel engines: Replace toothed belt and toothed belt tensioner.
