A - Discharged (own) battery;
B - External battery The battery is located in the engine compartment. If the engine does not start because the battery is low, another vehicle's battery and jumper wires can be used to start. In doing so, the following must be taken into account:
Both batteries must have a nominal voltage of 12 V. External battery capacity (in ampere-hours) should not be significantly lower than the capacity of a discharged battery.
To connect the batteries, only wires with a sufficient cross-sectional diameter can be used. The instructions of the cable manufacturer must be observed.
Use only special starter wires with insulated clamps.
A discharged battery can freeze even at -10°C. Before connecting the wires, the battery must be warmed up, otherwise it may explode.
Vehicle bodies must not be in contact with each other.
A discharged battery must be properly connected to the vehicle's electrical system.
Connect the external battery only in the following sequence:
- 1. Clamp one of the wires (most often red) connect to the positive pole of the discharged battery.
- 2. Second clamp of the same wire (red) connect to the positive pole of the external battery.
- 3. Second wire clamp (most often black or blue) connect to the negative pole of the external battery.
- 4. Other (black) second wire clamp (X) attach to a massive metal part that has reliable contact with "weight" car with dead battery (e.g. to the engine block).
It is not recommended to connect the last clamp directly to the negative pole of a discharged battery - due to the inevitable sparking, the explosive gas formed in the battery can explode.
Caution: Never touch the uninsulated parts of the terminals. Also make sure that the starter lead connected to the positive pole of the battery must not come into contact with metal parts of the vehicle - risk of short circuit! Route the jump leads so that they cannot be caught by rotating parts in the engine compartment.
Attention: Do not lean low over the battery - risk of burns!
Caution: Keep sparks and other sources of ignition away from the battery (open flame, burning cigarette, etc.) - risk of explosion!
Start the engine according to the instructions in chapter "Engine starting". If the engine does not start immediately, turn off the starter after 10 seconds of operation and try again after half a minute. After starting, disconnect the wires in reverse order.
