Attention: Vehicles built from 8/93 and models with a 1.9l supercharged diesel engine and with G60 and VR6 engines are equipped with a V-ribbed belt instead of a V-belt. The V-ribbed belt drives the generator, the coolant pump and, depending on the engine and vehicle version, the fan, the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor. On 4-cylinder engine models, the power steering pump is driven by an additional conventional V-belt, see chapter «Steering».
As part of the service, the poly V-belt must be checked for excessive wear (fringing of lateral surfaces, transverse cracks), and traces of oil. If necessary, the V-ribbed belt must be replaced.
Tension
Attention: On all models, it is not necessary to tighten the V-ribbed belt, because the spring-loaded tensioning roller keeps the belt tension constant. For the position of the tension roller, see section «Replacement».
Loosen alternator mounting bolts -1- and -2- at least 1 turn.
Using tensioning lever 3297 or a pry bar, push the generator down as far as it will go so that it can move freely. On the underside of the generator is a spring that pushes it up.
With the alternator still off, start the engine and let it idle for about 10 seconds. In this case, the belt tension is adjusted automatically. Stop the engine.
Tighten bolt -2- first to 25 Nm, then bolt -1-.
Attention: When doing this, do not lean on the generator and do not touch the belt.
Replacement
Attention: When applying the V-ribbed belt, it must be ensured that it is located exactly in the middle of all rollers and belt pulleys.
4 cylinder engine (except G60 engine)
Remove the power steering pump drive V-belt, see chapter «Steering».
Models without idler pulley: release alternator and press down, see section «Tension». Remove poly V-belt.
Models with tensioner pulley: use lever 3299 to move the tensioner pulley and remove the V-ribbed belt from the alternator pulley. If a special tool is not available, with some skill, you can make a suitable lever yourself. Remove poly V-belt.
Apply new belt.
Loosen and remove the special tool.
Start the engine and check the operation of the belt.
G60 engine
Remove the V-belt for the power steering pump drive, see chapter «Steering».
With a special tool (VW 3191) compress the spring and loosen the tensioner.
Remove the V-ribbed belt and put on a new one.
Loosen and remove the special tool.
Start the engine and check the operation of the belt.
VR6 engine
Remove the air filter housing.
Screw the MB bolt into the threaded hole -A- of the tensioning pulley until the V-ribbed belt is loosened.
Remove the V-ribbed belt and put on a new one.
Remove the M8 bolt from the tension roller.
Start the engine and check the operation of the belt.
