Removal and installation of a steering shaft

To remove, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Remove the horn switch trim, set the front wheels to the straight ahead position, unscrew the steering wheel nut and remove the steering wheel. Remove the fuse box cover. Remove the storage shelf on the driver's side. Disconnect the steering shaft universal joint. Remove the upper and lower steering column trims. Disconnect connectors from steering column switch housing.

Remove the steering column switch housing. Drill out the bolts securing the shaft support to the bulkhead shield. Remove steering shaft. marking the connecting flange.

Install the steering shaft in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:

• observe the required tightening torques for screw connections:
• install new shear bolts securing the shaft support to the bulkhead:
• install the steering shaft according to the marks made on the connecting flange during removal;
• Before installing the steering shaft, make sure that the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
