On vehicles with drum brakes on the rear wheels, remove the brake shoes from the drum by pushing up the bar of the mechanism for automatically adjusting the gap between the shoes and the drum using a screwdriver through the threaded hole for the wheel bolt.
On vehicles with rear disc brakes, remove the brake caliper assembly with brake pads and pad guide as described in section «Brake system». Remove the hub cap, remove the cotter pin and toothed nut stopper.
Loosen the hub hex nut and remove the washer. Remove the hub integral with the brake drum or disc, making sure that the inner race of the outer bearing does not fall out. Using a brass mandrel, press out the outer races of the bearings. Remove inner bearing inner race from hub axle. On vehicles with rear disc brakes, also remove the protective ring.
Clean the brake drum or disc, check the condition of the parts and replace worn parts. If necessary, grind both brake drums. Before installing reusable wheel bearings, do not flush them. To install the rear wheel hubs, using a press and a VW 432 or 411 copper mandrel, press the outer ring of the inner bearing into the brake drum or disc. Press in the new oil seal until it stops, using a mandrel of the desired size or with a hammer, striking crosswise. On vehicles with disc brakes, install a new protective ring, respecting the dimension of 9.5 mm between the ring and the brake shield (pic. 5-11).
Install the inner race of the inner bearing on the hub axle. On vehicles with rear drum brakes, sand the working surface of the brake drum with sandpaper and clean it thoroughly.
Put about 20 g of universal grease in the space between the hub bearings. Install the inner race of the outer bearing on the hub axle, laying multipurpose grease in it. Reinstall the brake drum or disc, install the washer and screw on the hub nut.
Adjust the clearance in the wheel bearings. as below. After adjusting the clearance in the bearings, lock the hub nut with a toothed stopper and a new cotter pin.
Install the hub cap with about 10 g of multipurpose grease.
On vehicles with rear disc brakes, install the brake caliper assembly with shoe guide and brake shoes as described in section «Brake system».
