Removal and installation of the power unit

Remove the battery. Open the cap of the expansion tank. Disconnect hoses from radiator and drain coolant. Drain the oil from the engine oil sump. Remove the air filter assembly with air supply hose and vacuum hose. Unscrew the lower bolt of fastening of the radiator lining, disconnect the fastening latches of the facing near the bolt and remove the lining forward. Remove the radiator grille. Disconnect wires from headlights. Remove the radiator mounting bracket. Disconnect the drive cable from the hood latch and remove it from the radiator grille. Unscrew the two bolts securing the radiator lining, located in front under the headlights, lift and remove the radiator lining with the headlights. Disconnect the cooling system hoses connecting the radiator to the cylinder head, water pump and expansion tank (disconnect from the engine or tank). Disconnect the wire connectors for the electric fan and the sensor for turning it on. Raise the radiator assembly with the electric fan mounting bracket with the electric fan and guide casings. Disconnect the wires from the alternator, oil pressure warning light sensor, intake manifold heating thermal switch, carburetor starter cover thermal switch. as well as the wire of the ignition coil, the connector of the reverse light switch and the connectors of other components and sensors, depending on the configuration. On cars with a carburetor engine, disconnect the fuel supply and drain hoses from the fuel pump. On vehicles with a fuel injection system, disconnect the fuel supply and return hoses from the fuel pressure regulator. Disconnect the throttle cable. Disconnect the jumper connecting to the gearbox «weight» and a flexible speedometer drive shaft. Remove starter. Disconnect coolant hoses from cylinder head. Disconnect the clutch cable or disconnect the clutch slave cylinder from the clutch housing and hang the cylinder to the body without disconnecting the pipeline going to the clutch master cylinder.


Loosen the gearbox mount bolt. Remove the receiver, disconnect the vacuum hose from the vacuum brake booster. Remove the rear subframe from the engine mount by removing the three mounting bolts. Disconnect the front wheel drive shafts from the gearbox, as described in subsection «Front wheel drive», and hang them with hooks to the body. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold. Disconnect the gearshift linkage or gear selection cable as indicated in the relevant subsections. Install the lifting device and sling the engine. Remove engine and transmission mounts (pic. 2-1). lift the engine assembly with the gearbox and remove them from the engine compartment upwards Place the power unit on a workbench and disconnect the gearbox from the engine.



Engine installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:

• observe the specified tightening torques for threaded connections;
• adjust the tension of the camshaft and generator drive belts;
• fill the cooling system with liquid and remove air from it;
• pour oil into the engine;
• check and, if necessary, adjust the idle speed of the engine;
• make sure the systems are sealed.
