This adjustment requires an indicator with a scale of 5 mm, equipped with a stem with a length of at least 95 mm with a flat tip, as well as a stand for mounting the indicator (e.g. type VW 20 66).
On engines «1Y», «RA», «SB» shift the start lever of the injection pump to the full down. Unscrew the screw plug, which is located at the rear of the pump between the high-pressure pipe fittings. Screw the rack into the hole for the plug, after making sure that its clamping pin protrudes 2.5 mm (engines «1Y», «RA», «SB»,) or 3 mm (engine «AAZ»). Attach the indicator to the end of the rack (pic. 3-39). Slowly turn the engine crankshaft counterclockwise until until the indicator needle stops. In this position, set the indicator needle to zero. Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the TDC mark of the piston of the 1st cylinder on the flywheel is aligned with the mounting lug in the clutch housing hatch. In this position, measure the stroke of the pump plunger with an indicator, which should correspond to the values indicated in tables 3-8 and 3-9.
If the plunger stroke deviates from the norm, loosen the pump mounting bolts and turn the pump housing until the required value is obtained. To facilitate rotation of the pump housing, it is recommended to loosen the high pressure fuel line fittings. After adjustment, tighten the pump and fuel pipe fitting bolts. Unscrew the stand with the indicator and screw the screw plug into the pump hole.
