Heat shield fastening elements
- 1 - heat shield,
- 2 - nut,
- 3 - screw
Elements of fastening of a casing of steering draught
- 1 - plastic nut,
- 2 - clamp
Elements of the top fastening of a rotary fist
- 1 - nut,
- 2 - upper transverse levers,
- 3, 4 - tie rod mount
Adjustment of the convergence of the front wheels is carried out by changing the length of the tie rod ends in the threaded connection. Tie rod ends must not have play. If the protective covers are damaged, they must be replaced immediately. The tie rod ends can be replaced without removing the steering gear.
Removing
1. On engines with five valves, remove the air filter with the air intake pipe.
2. On four-cylinder engines, unscrew the nut and screw and remove the heat shield, see fig. Elements of fastening of a thermoprotective screen.
3. Loosen the front wheel bolts, then raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on stands. Remove the front wheels.
4. Loosen the plastic nut (1), then using the blade of a thin screwdriver, remove the two clips (2) and remove the steering rod cover, see fig. Elements of fastening of a casing of steering draft.
5. Loosen the clamps securing the protective cover of the steering gear.
6. Loosen the bolts (3 and 4) (see fig. Elements of the top fastening of a rotary fist), that secure the tie rod end and move the tie rod down.
7. Move the protective cover of the steering gear to the steering rod and, using the special tool VAG 1923, unscrew the steering rod.
8. Remove the tie rod from the vehicle.
Installation
1. Check the condition and, if necessary, replace the tie rod or tie rod joint.
2. If necessary, unscrew the steering end from the tie rod, while counting the number of turns when unscrewing. Screw the new tie rod end into the tie rod the same number of turns.
3. When installing a new tie rod, measure and, if necessary, correct the length of the tie rod, while its length should be equal to the length of the removed tie rod.
4. Tighten locknut (IN) tie rod with a torque of 40 Nm, while holding the tie rod against turning by the hexagon (A).
5. Install the tie rod in place and screw it to the steering gear.
6. Install the tie rod end to the steering knuckle and tighten the bolt (3) (see fig. Elements of the top fastening of a rotary fist) torque 7 Nm. Screw on a new self-locking nut (4) and tighten it to 45 Nm.
7. Reinstall the protective cover of the steering gear and secure it with clamps.
8. Apply a thin layer of lubricant to the shoulder that centered the wheel disc. Install the wheel and secure it with bolts.
9. Lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the wheel bolts to 120 Nm.
10. On engines with five valves, install the air filter and air intake pipe.
11. On four-cylinder engines, reinstall and screw on the heat shield.
12. Check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment.
