Checking the dust covers of the front suspension joints

Check of a condition of dustproof covers of the lower hinges of a forward suspension bracket

Check of a condition of dustproof covers of the lower hinges (1) front suspension and tie rod end (2)

Order of execution

1. Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands with the wheels hanging in the air.

2. Illuminate the dust covers of the front suspension lower pivot points with a portable lamp (arrows) (see fig. Check of a condition of dustproof covers of the lower hinges of a forward suspension bracket) and check their status.

3. Illuminate the dust covers of the upper front suspension joints with a portable lamp (1), as well as a dustproof cover of the tie rod end (2) and check their condition, see fig. Check of a condition of dustproof covers of the lower hinges (1) front suspension and tie rod end (2).

Warning: Any wear on these boots will result in loss of lubricant and ingress of water and dirt, resulting in rapid wear of the ball joints or steering gear.

In the event of defects, for safety reasons, have the corresponding joint with dust cover replaced at a VW workshop.
