Note: Before working on headlights with discharge lamps, turn them off and turn the key to position 0 (pre-stop).
Note: Automatic headlight range control and adaptive headlamp lighting with gas discharge lamps are equipped with a self-diagnosis function.
Note: When carrying out repair work, it is necessary to know how the lighting system works and how to control it.
General description
Main headlights with HID lamps and AFS cornering light system (Adaptive Frontlighting System) have a function «bixenon».
Discharge lamps in conventional «xenon» headlights emit only dipped beam. «Bixenon» allows you to radiate «one» gas-discharge lamp and low beam and high beam. To do this, the electromechanical regulator (damper for left low beam and damper for right low beam) when the high beam is switched on, it opens the closed section of the low beam and the high beam distribution is switched on.
For this reason, in «bi-xenon» headlights, along with the low beam, the high beam is automatically adjusted.
In main headlights with gas discharge lamps and cornering light system «extra high beam» absent.
The adaptive lighting system includes the following features:
- swivel low and high beam (dynamic adaptive lighting system) at a vehicle speed of more than 10 km/h and the angle of rotation of the front wheels, the adaptive lighting lamp (static adaptive lighting) in tight turns (turning radius < 500 m) or when turning and speeds up to 50 km/h.
Fault recognition and error indication
The automatic headlight range control, the cornering light system and the onboard electrical system control unit are equipped with a self-diagnosis function that makes it easier to troubleshoot headlights with cornering light system HID lamps.
For troubleshooting, use one of the «Automotive diagnostic and information-measuring systems» testers in the mode «Gefuehrte Fehlersuche/Guided Fault Finding».
Note: If there is a problem with the headlight range control or the AFS cornering light system (Adaptive Frontlighting System) warning lamp on in the instrument cluster «Lampenausfall/ Lamp failure».
