Attention: When the cardan shaft is dismantled, the car must not rest on the wheels with its full mass, since in the absence of axial preload, the hub bearing is damaged. Since the driveshaft shank is pressed into the wheel hub, a suitable puller is required to remove it.
Removing
Mark the direction of tire rotation with an arrow. Loosen wheel bolts. Raise the car so that the front axle is unloaded and the wheels still touch the floor.
Loosen the nut securing the propshaft shank to the wheel hub, see chapter «Removal and installation of an amortization rack».
Remove lower engine cover.
Loosen the bolts securing the driveshaft to the gearbox shaft flange. This requires a replaceable externally slotted socket, eg HAZET 990 Lg-10 or HAZET 2751. If necessary, remove the heat shield under the inner universal joint.
Remove front wheel.
Mark with a scriber the mounting position of the three bolts in relation to the transverse link and remove the bolts, see chapter «Removal and installation of an amortization rack».
Press out the driveshaft using a suitable puller, eg VW-3283, and a steel cylinder.
Remove cardan shaft.
Installation
Note: Remove any traces of corrosion, grease and sealant residues from the threads and splines of the outer universal joint shaft and from the splines of the wheel hub.
Attention: Depending on the chassis version, lubricate the splines of the universal joint shank, see chapter «Removal and installation of an amortization rack».
Insert the shank of the universal joint into the splines of the wheel hub.
Pre-tighten new propshaft mounting bolts to 10 Nm.
Screw a new stamped nut or 12-point nut onto the thread of the universal joint shank and tighten to the specified torque, see chapter «Removal and installation of an amortization rack».
Caution: When replacing a forged rim nut with a 12-point nut, be sure to replace the nuts on both sides.
Bolt propshaft to gearbox shaft flange. Tightening torque: for M8 bolts - 40 Nm, for M10 bolts - 70 Nm.
Bolt the ball joint to the transverse link using new bolts and a new fold-out washer, see chapter «Removal and installation of an amortization rack».
If necessary, install a heat shield under the inner universal joint.
Install lower engine cover.
Ensure the same direction of rotation of the tires, bolt the wheels, lower the vehicle and only then tighten the wheel bolts in a crosswise manner to 120 Nm.
Attention: Strictly follow the instructions given in chapter «Removal and installation of a wheel».
