Connecting the towing cable/towing eye
Front towing eye
Remove the towing eye from the on-board tool kit in the luggage compartment.
- POLO: Remove cover -1- for right fog lamp. To do this, pull the cover at the locking lugs -arrows- forward, release it from the opposite holders by tilting and remove it.
- IBIZA: on the left side of the right fog lamp, unscrew the fastening screw (1 screw) and remove the cover.
Screw the towing eye by hand by turning it to the left -arrow- along the thread as far as it will go, then insert a screwdriver or wheel bolt wrench into the eye and tighten the eye.
Attention: After use, put the towing eye back into the tool kit. The towing eye must always be in the vehicle. Hang the cover of the fog lamp or screw it on.
Rear towing eye
The rear towing eye is welded on the rear right under the bumper.
Towing Rules
Switch on the ignition of the vehicle being towed to unlock the steering wheel so that the direction indicators and brake lights can function.
Place the gearshift lever in the neutral position; for vehicles with an automatic transmission, the operating mode selector lever must be in position N.
Turn on the hazard warning lights on both vehicles.
Since the boosters for the brake system and the steering mechanism only work when the engine is running, more force must be applied to the brake pedal and steering wheel on a vehicle with the engine not running!
If there is no oil in the manual or automatic transmission, respectively, the vehicle must only be towed with the drive wheels raised.
It is recommended to use a tow bar. When using a tow rope, there is a high risk of collision. The tow rope must be flexible in order to be gentle on both the towed vehicle and the towed vehicle. Only use a rope made of synthetic material or with an elastic intermediate link.
When using a tow rope, the driver of the towing vehicle must release the clutch pedal gently after engaging the gear. The driver of the towed vehicle must ensure that the cable is always taut.
Maximum towing speed: 50 km/h!
Vehicle with automatic transmission: maximum towing distance 50 km.
Vehicle with automatic transmission and all-wheel drive: do not tow the vehicle with the front or rear axle raised.
Starting the engine by towing the car (emergency start)
You should first try to use another vehicle's battery to start.
Attention: It is not possible to start the engine by towing the vehicle with an automatic transmission.
Vehicles with a gasoline engine may be towed for the purpose of starting the engine on a distance of up to 50 m, otherwise there is a risk of damage to the catalytic converter.
Before towing, shift into 2nd or 3rd gear and depress and hold the clutch pedal.
Turn on the ignition.
While both vehicles are moving, slowly release the clutch pedal.
As soon as the engine starts, disengage the clutch and gear to avoid hitting the towing vehicle.
