Removing
Remove shock absorber.
Attention! To disassemble the shock absorber, you will have to compress the spring.
Compress the shock strut spring with the tool and loosen the hex nut on the piston rod, holding it from turning with a bent box wrench.
Remove coil spring.
Installation
Attention! When replacing a spring, only use a spring with the same designation as the old one. Pay attention to color coding.
Check shock absorber before installation.
Attention! In the event of a defective shock absorber, it is not necessary to replace both shock absorbers, but in any case only original Volkswagen shock absorbers should be used.
Install the protective tube and hollow rubber spring on the shock absorber.
Install the shock absorber ring on the helical spring (install the spring in turns with a smaller step up).
Compress the coil spring with a spring compressor until the threads on the piston rod protrude from the stop by approx. 10 mm.
Install washer, upper spring plate (pay attention to the correct installation), shock absorber support, spacer sleeve, shock absorber ring (talcum powder), shock absorber housing, thrust ring and stop (see above fig. "shock absorber strut").
Tighten the new self-locking nut on the shock absorber piston rod to 60 Nm (6.0 kgcm).
Install shock absorber.
Examination
Shock absorbers can be checked without the use of additional tools.
Remove shock absorber.
Holding the shock absorber vertically (those. in working position; it is most convenient to put it on the ground and hold it with your feet), stretch and squeeze it several times in a row.
The shock absorber must move evenly throughout the entire stroke, without jerking. If possible, compare the nature of the movement with the movement of the new shock absorber.
A faulty shock absorber is also recognized while driving - by knocking or strong rocking of the body.
If the shock absorber works flawlessly, small oil leaks are not grounds for replacing it. With large oil losses, the shock absorber is compressed and unclenched in jerks. In this case, it must be replaced.
Visually inspect the shock absorber piston rod. If the chrome coating is damaged, replace the entire shock absorber.
Note. With one faulty shock absorber, it is not necessary to replace two shock absorbers at the same time.
