Draining or pumping out engine oil
On engines with a vertical oil filter, the oil filter must be changed before changing the oil. When the filter element is removed, the bypass valve opens and the oil in the filter housing flows into the oil pan.
To remove oil from the engine, do the following:
1. Extract the engine oil using an oil extractor or remove the drain plug and drain the engine oil.
Attention: the oil drain plug is equipped with a non-removable lip seal, so the plug must be replaced.
2. Screw in a new drain plug by hand and tighten to the specified torque. Drain plug tightening torque: 30 Nm.
Oil filter replacement
Replacing the oil filter on engines with the letters BGU (1.6 l, gasoline, 75 kW, 102 hp), BSE (1.6l, gasoline, 75 kW, 102 hp until 05.2005), BSF (1.6 l, gasoline, 75 kW, 102 hp since 06.2006), BSX (2.0 l, gas, 60 kW, 109 hp)
Follow these steps to replace the oil filter.
1. Unscrew the oil filter (arrow) from below using a puller or an oil filter wrench.
2. Clean the contact surface on the oil heat exchanger.
3. Lightly coat the rubber seal of the new filter with engine oil. This achieves the best tightness of the connection after tightening the filter.
4. Tighten the filter by hand.
Replacing the oil filter on engines with the letters BCA (1.4 l, gasoline, 55 kW, 75 hp until 05.2006), BUD (1.4 l petrol, 59 kW, 80 hp, from 05.2006)
Follow these steps to replace the oil filter.
1. Lubricate new O-rings before installation.
2. Do not allow oil to get on the components and parts in the engine compartment.
3. Loosen the oil filter (arrow), preferably from below, using an open end wrench (32 mm), and remove the oil filter.
4. Clean the contact surface on the motor.
5. Lightly grease the rubber seal of the new filter.
6. Screw the filter onto the fitting and tighten it by hand.
Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
Replacing the oil filter on engines with the letters BDJ (2.0 L, SDI.51 kW, 70 hp), BJB (1.9 L, TD1, 77 kW, 105 hp), BLS (1.9L, TD1.77 kW, 105 hp), BST (2.0L, SD1.51kW, 70hp), SSU (1.9 L, TDI, 55 kW, 70 hp)
Follow these steps to replace the oil filter.
1. Lubricate new O-rings before installation.
2. Unscrew the cover (arrow) with socket wrench (S=36 mm). Before draining or pumping out the engine oil, the cap must be removed so that the oil can flow out of the filter housing.
3. Clean the contact surfaces of the cover and oil filter housing.
4. Replace filter element.
5. Replace O-rings.
6. Screw on the cap (arrow) and tighten it to 25 Nm.
Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
Filling the engine with oil
General instructions
After the oil has been filled, wait at least 3 minutes and then check the oil level.
To fill the engine with oil, follow these steps:
Remove the dipstick, wipe it with a clean rag, and then insert it back until it stops. Then remove the dipstick again and check the oil level (see section «Checking the engine oil level»).
Engine oil
Engine oil approvals for cars serviced and not serviced according to the Longlife regulations.
Gasoline engines
With Longlife service (OG1)
Gasoline engines | VW approvals |
4-cylinder | 504 00 as an alternative to 503 00 |
Without Longlife Service (OG0/QG2)
Gasoline engines | VW approvals |
4-cylinder | 504 00 alternative to 501 01/502 00 |
Diesel engines
With Longlife service (QG1)
Diesel engines | VW approvals |
4-cylinder (with unit injectors and without particulate filter as standard) | 507 00 or 506 01 |
4-cylinder (with unit injectors and standard diesel particulate filter) * | 507 00 |
Without LongLife service (QG0/QG2)
Diesel engines | VW approvals |
4-cylinder (with unit injectors and without particulate filter as standard) | 507 00 as an alternative to 50501 |
4-cylinder (with unit injectors and standard diesel particulate filter) * | 50 700 |
* For engines with unit injectors and diesel particulate filter as standard (PR number 7GG) Use only engine oil that meets the VW 507 00 standard.
On vehicles designated for LongLife service (PR number OG1), but serviced at service intervals, «depending on mileage or time», the maintenance indicator needs to be recoded to «inflexible» mode.
