It should be noted that checking and adjusting the angles of the front wheels cannot be carried out if you do not have special instruments and tools. The description of this operation must be supplemented by the operating instructions for the respective devices.
Poorly adjusted front wheel alignment can cause premature tire wear and poor vehicle performance.
Wheel alignment
The toe-in can be adjusted on the tie rods, and not as it used to be on Volkswagen, where it was possible to adjust only on the left tie rod. Toe-in is measured in the usual way, with attention to the fact that the values are given in degrees and minutes. The wheels must be free. The digital value of the convergence is indicated in the table of adjustments and control.
The steering must be exactly in the middle position (straight ahead). To adjust the wheel alignment, loosen the lock nuts on both sides of the vehicle located on the tie rod ends. To prevent the steering boot from turning, loosen the clamp on the outside.
Turn the tie rod left or right with pliers. Move both tie rod tubes by the same amount so that the steering wheel remains in the center position. Tighten the locknuts of the tie rod ends to 55 Nm and reattach the protective covers.
Camber angle
The camber angle is not adjustable, but it can be measured in the usual way. If the camber angle does not correspond to the values given in the table of adjustments and control, or the difference between the left and right wheels is more than 45', then the suspension is deformed.
Angle of longitudinal inclination of the axis of rotation
The angle of the longitudinal inclination of the axis of rotation on the vehicles considered in the book is not adjustable, however, it should not exceed the values given in the table of adjustments and control. The difference between both sides should not be more than 40'.
When measuring, the slope must be taken into account, which may lead to an inaccurate result when measuring.
Note. Unusual and uneven tire wear that occurs despite proper front wheel alignment indicates that the front suspension is deformed.
