To remove the wheel bearing housing, see section 13.1. After removing the bearing housing, unscrew either the bolts holding the ball joint, or disconnect it. Remove the shock absorber from the steering knuckle;
After removing the wheel bearing housing, adjust the front wheel alignment angles.
Wheel bearing replacement procedure:
- remove the brake disc (bolt) and steering knuckle reflector (3 bolts);
- place the steering knuckle with wheel hub front side down on the press and press the wheel hub with the press mandrel through the wheel bearing. The way to install the mandrel is shown in Figure 289. The force can only be applied to the reverse side of the wheel hub;
- thoroughly clean the inside of the bearing bore and remove the wheel bearing circlip (circlip pliers);
Pic. 289. Pressing the wheel hub out of the steering knuckle. A pressure plate 2 is put on the press punch 1, which should only press on the wheel hub. When extruding, the wheel hub falls into the substituted pipe section 3. When extruding the bearing, replace the pressure plate 2 with another one that will press only on the outer race of the bearing
- in the position of the rotary fist on the press (pic. 289) push the wheel bearing out. To do this, use a mandrel that has a size that matches the outer ring of the wheel bearing;
Pic. 290. Puller VW431 for removing the inner ring of the wheel bearing
- press out the wheel bearing inner race with a two-jaw puller (pic. 290);
- thoroughly clean the steering knuckle. Cover the receiving hole of the steering knuckle with Molykote graphite grease.
Assembly order:
- put the wheel bearing housing on the press (pic. 289), press in the bearing and install the circlip;
- put the hub on the press and press the wheel bearing housing with the bearing installed in it into the hub. To do this, use a piece of pipe, the diameter of which corresponds to the inner diameter of the bearing, to press the wheel bearing housing and wheel bearing against the wheel hub;
- carry out the rest of the work in the reverse order of the removal process.
