If you want to remove the camshaft gear, then it should be fixed in a stationary position with a mandrel and unscrew the bolt. Since the camshaft gear is firmly in place, insert a mandrel into one of the holes in the gear and remove the gear with short blows of a rubber or plastic hammer. Remove the camshaft sprocket key. Otherwise, remove the camshaft sprocket after removing the camshaft itself.
Pic. 436. The camshaft bearing caps have numbers printed on them that go from left to right
The cylinder head with the camshaft located in it now looks like in fig. 436. Remove a camshaft, being guided by designation of numbers of covers of bearings.
Unscrew slowly and alternately on each side of the bearing caps No. 1, 3 and 5 and remove them. Do not unscrew bearing caps #2 and #4 yet.
Loosen bearing cap nuts #2 and #4 each 2 turns evenly and in a criss-cross pattern until both caps are loosened. Remove the covers and remove the camshaft. Cover number 1 may contain an O-ring for the cylinder head cover.
Clamp the shaft in a vise with metal jaws and remove the camshaft sprocket bolt, if not already done. Remove the gear wheel and remove the elastic washer. Remove the seal from the other side.
Remove pushrods if necessary. In order not to confuse them, mark them by putting risks on them from the inside: for the first pusher - one, for the second two, etc. The countdown is carried out from the side where the gas distribution mechanism drive is located.
Lay the tappets on the camshaft side on a clean cloth to prevent oil from escaping.
Checking the camshaft
Checking the camshaft is described when repairing the cylinder head.
