- turn the interior heating control lever on the instrument panel to position «Heiss» (hot);
- unscrew the cover of the expansion tank. If the engine is hot, then you should wait a while before opening the expansion tank cap;
- place a container under the engine to drain the fluid.
Engine 2.0L

Part of the details of the cooling system of the 2.0-liter engine: 1 - radiator; 2 - radiator casing; 3 - upper coolant hose; 4 - bolt, 10 Nm; 5 - support rod; 6 - lower coolant hose; 7 - fan mounting ring; 8 - cooling system fan; 9 - plug-in block of the temperature switch, black; 10 - temperature switch, 35 Nm
Pic. 183. Draining the coolant from the cooling system of a 2.0-liter engine: 1 - coolant hose; 2 - connecting element; 3 - clamp; 4 - thermostat flange
Disconnect the bottom hose 6 (pic. 182) coolant from the radiator or unscrew the coolant pipe connector (pic. 183) and drain the coolant.
Note. If the coolant is still in good condition, i.e. it was recently poured, it can be reused.
Note. The hoses at their joints are fastened with clamps similar to clamps, which are recommended to be removed using special wire cutters numbered 798-5.
VR6 engine
Pic. 181. Part of the details of the VR6 engine cooling system: 1 - rubber support; 2 - upper radiator hose from the thermostat housing; 3 - radiator; 4 - radiator casing; 5 - bolt, 10 Nm; 6 - rubber washer; 7 - supporting leg; 8 - plug-in block of the right fan (black); 9 - clamp for the plug-in block of the right fan; 10 - right fan; 11 - fan casing; 12 - inlet hose; 13 - hose under pressure; 14 - high pressure air pump; 15 - hose clamp; 16 - bolt, 25 Nm; 17 - left fan; 18 - plug for the left fan (black); 19 - lower radiator hose (from the thermostat); 20 - plug-in block of the temperature switch (black); 21 - temperature switch for fan
- Unscrew the drain plug or disconnect the lower hose from the radiator 19 (pic. 181) coolant and drain the coolant into a prepared container;
- on a 2.0-liter engine, connect the lower coolant hose to the radiator or screw the coolant pipe with a new gasket;
- on the VR6 engine, screw in the drain plug with a new sealing washer and tighten it to 10 Nm. If the lower coolant hose was disconnected from the radiator, reinstall it;
Pic. 184. Expansion tank of the cooling system. The coolant level in the expansion tank must be between the marks «max» and «Min» (shown by arrow)
- fill the coolant into the expansion tank up to the mark «max» (pic. 184) and wrap the cap of the expansion tank;
- start the engine and let it run until the fan turns on (2.0 liter engine) or fans (VR6 engine);
- stop the engine and let it cool down;
Attention! electric fan (or electric fans) can turn on independently, even several times, even when the ignition is off due to heating in the engine compartment of the car.
- check the coolant level in the expansion tank. It should fit between the marks «max» and «Min» on the expansion tank. If the level is low, add coolant. If the engine is hot, the coolant level may be slightly above the mark «max».
Note. In the absence of a special coolant, it is allowed to use clean «soft» (e.g. rain) water, but its use increases the freezing point, increases corrosion and scale formation.
Attention! The presence of water in the expansion tank at negative temperatures is not allowed.
