Elements of the ignition system on the VR6 engine (with Motronic injection system): 1 - three-pin plug-in block (black color), for the Hall sensor; 2 - Hall sensor; 3 - bolt, 10 Nm; 4 - HV wire guide, to the high voltage transformer; 5 - spacer ring; 6 - five-pin plug, to the high voltage transformer; 7 - plug suppressing radio interference; 8 - high voltage transformer; 9 - plug block of the knock sensor; 10 - cover of the camshaft drive mechanism; 11 - bolt, 20 Nm; 12 - knock sensor II, on the suction side; 13 - Hall sensor disk; 14 - bolt, 100 Nm; 15 - knock sensor l, on the exhaust side; 16 - spark plug, 25 Nm; 17 - O-ring; 18 - spark plug tip
The 2.0-liter engine has an ignition system (pic. 210) part of the Simos integrated injection and ignition system, while the VR6 engine has an ignition system (pic. 211) part of the integrated Motronic system.
Combining the injection and ignition systems into a single electronic system has the following advantages:
- combination of functions of units and sensors allows to reduce their number;
- the processes of ignition and mixture formation are optimized together, while improving the characteristics of torque, fuel consumption, exhaust gas composition, starting and warming up a cold engine is facilitated;
- great opportunities open up for other functions:
- automatic transmission control;
- control of the traction control system;
- anti-lock braking system control;
- control of air conditioner, anti-theft device, etc.
Ignition systems have no moving parts and therefore require no maintenance. They do not have adjustments, since the ignition control is completely electronic and is carried out by the ECU, which uses information about the engine operating mode received from the sensors of the engine management system.
