Checking the ignition coil

At the ignition coil, the resistance of the winding is checked, whether there is a short circuit between the windings and a breakdown of the insulation on «mass». Insulation breakdown on «mass» detected by burnout or melting of the plastic shell of the ignition coil. Measure the resistance of the ignition coil winding with an ohmmeter.

Check the ignition coil in the following order.

2.0 liter engine:

• turn off the ignition and disconnect the high voltage wire from the high voltage transformer;

• connect an ohmmeter between the terminals «1» (plus) And «15» (minus) (pic. 215) and measure the resistance of the primary winding, which should be 0.5-1.2 ohms;
• connect an ohmmeter between the terminals «15» and «4» (central cable) and measure the resistance of the secondary winding, which should be 3-4 kOhm;
• if the resistance does not correspond to the specified values, then a new high voltage transformer should be installed.

VR6 engine

It is recommended to check the ignition coils of the VR6 engine at the service station.
